Start with the problem you want to solve
A working iPhone 16 Pro Max does not become inadequate because a successor exists. Identify a specific limit: storage you repeatedly fill, a camera capability you need, or a battery that no longer lasts through your day. If the only issue is an aging battery, compare the cost of battery service with a full replacement.
What the manufacturer documents
Apple lists a nominal 6.9-inch display on both models. The 17 Pro Max adds a 2 TB storage configuration; the 16 Pro Max offers 256 GB, 512 GB and 1 TB. There is no 128 GB 16 Pro Max configuration in Apple’s specification. Compare the exact storage tier you would buy, rather than treating the family’s maximum capacity as standard.
Treat battery claims as conditional
Apple specifies up to 39 hours of video playback for the US iPhone 17 Pro Max and up to 33 hours for the 16 Pro Max. These are manufacturer test claims, not Specdex measurements or promises of everyday screen-on time. Cellular reception, apps, brightness and battery health can change your experience. Charging claims also specify an adapter and test conditions; an adapter’s wattage is not a measurement of phone charging power.
Our editorial recommendation
Keep a functioning 16 Pro Max if its storage, cameras and battery still meet your needs. Consider the 17 Pro Max when a documented capability addresses a limitation you actually experience. Before buying, compare the current offer, realistic trade-in credit, taxes, accessories and any battery-service alternative. Our upgrade tool lets you enter your own quotes; it never substitutes launch-price differences for your cost.
