AV1 is an open, royalty-free video codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media. ~30% more efficient than HEVC at the same quality, and hardware-decoded on every consumer GPU since 2022 (RTX 30+, Intel Arc, RDNA 3). YouTube, Netflix, and Twitch all stream AV1 by default to compatible clients.
